App Store Connect character limits at a glance
These are field limits, not a recommendation to fill every field. A concise, accurate listing is more useful than text padded to reach the maximum. Apple can change its interface or requirements, so use the live App Store Connect form as the final check.
| Field | Maximum | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| App name | 30 | Distinct, recognizable product name |
| Subtitle | 30 | Short explanation of the app’s value |
| Promotional text | 170 | Timely information; Apple says it does not affect search ranking |
| Keywords | 100 bytes | Relevant terms separated with commas; commas count toward the byte limit |
| Description | 4,000 | Explain what the app does clearly and accurately |
How to use the keyword field carefully
Use the keyword field for relevant terms that are not already represented in other metadata. Apple’s guidance is to separate terms with commas and avoid spaces after commas. Keep natural spaces inside a multiword phrase when needed. Don’t add competitor names, unrelated trending words or claims the app cannot support.
The keyword counter measures UTF-8 bytes, including commas and spaces. That matters because Apple’s keyword limit is stated in bytes, not characters. It won’t decide whether a phrase is relevant, whether it duplicates another field, or whether a claim is permitted. That still needs a human review.
What promotional text does—and does not do
Promotional text sits above the description on the App Store product page and can be updated without submitting a new app version. Apple explicitly says promotional text does not affect search ranking. Use it for a genuine update, event or current message, not as a substitute for the app name, subtitle or keyword field.
Why this is a drafting aid, not an Apple validator
This tool counts text locally and gives a quick estimate. Unicode has composed characters, emoji sequences and other cases where two counters may disagree. It also cannot validate required metadata, policy compliance, localization, duplicate keywords or whether your claims are accurate. App Store Connect remains the source of truth when you save a listing.
If you need to plan the wider listing, see the App Store metadata workflow, the duplicate keyword checker, and Dispatch’s keyword research guide.
Frequently asked questions
What are the App Store metadata limits?
Apple currently lists 30 characters for the name, 30 for the subtitle, 170 for promotional text, 100 bytes for keywords and 4,000 characters for the description. Confirm the latest limits in App Store Connect.
Does promotional text affect search ranking?
No. Apple’s product-page guidance says promotional text does not affect search ranking.
Is this tool private?
Yes. Counting runs in your browser. This page has no submit action and does not send your draft text to Yuzool.
Does the counter exactly match Apple?
Not guaranteed. Unicode character sequences can be counted differently by different systems. Treat the result as a drafting estimate and verify in App Store Connect.
