Record the high-value item you would need to describe to an insurer. Keep the receipt, model number or purchase date where it is easy to find. Add a photo only when it clarifies condition, location or identity. Note the document or renewal date that belongs with the item. Review one room or category at a time.

Keep it maintainable

Update the record when something changes instead of promising yourself an annual inventory project. The best household reference is the one that is easy to correct and easy for another person to understand.
