Inch ruler

An inch ruler with fractions down to 1/16 inch, at real size once calibrated.

0 in

Put one end of the thing you're measuring on the zero line, then drag the other handle to its far end. Drag the zero line too, to measure between two marks. Calibration is saved on this device.

About the inch ruler

This ruler opens in inches. The readout gives the length as a fraction (to the nearest 1/16 inch) and in decimal inches to two places, with centimetres alongside, so you don't have to count ticks.

Calibrate it once with a bank card (3.37 inches wide) so its inches are real on your screen.

How to use it

  1. Tap Calibrate and match the drawn card to a real one, then tap Done.
  2. Place the object with one end at the zero line.
  3. Drag the coloured handle to the far end and read the fraction, for example 1 3/16 in.
  4. Switch to cm at the top any time.

Questions

How do I read an inch ruler?

The numbers are whole inches. The marks between them halve each space again and again: the middle mark is 1/2, then 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16. The readout here does the counting for you.

How precise is the inch readout?

The fraction is rounded to the nearest 1/16 inch (about 1.6 mm) and the decimal to a hundredth of an inch. How close it is to the real object depends on a careful calibration and lining the ends up well.

How many inches is a bank card?

A standard card is 3.37 inches wide and 2.125 inches tall (85.60 by 53.98 mm).
