Expense tracker spreadsheet template

Add a row for every spend: the date, what it was, a category and the amount. The totals beside the list add up each category with SUMIF, and the chart shows where the money went.

What’s in it

The template opens with example numbers you can type over, and a chart that follows the numbers. Here’s the first sheet as it opens:

The formulas it uses

  • G2: =SUMIF(C:C,F2,D:D) gives $136.05. SUMIF: adds the cells that match.
  • G7: =SUM(G2:G6) gives $305.55. SUM: adds the numbers.

Tips

  • Keep the category names exactly the same each time (Groceries, not groceries or Food): SUMIF matches them as text.
  • Add a new category by typing it in the list on the right with its own SUMIF beside it.
  • Sort by the Amount column to find the biggest spends of the month.

Questions

Can I track more than one month?

Yes. Keep adding rows: every SUMIF reads whole columns, so the totals cover everything. For a month at a time, duplicate the sheet and clear the rows.

How do I see spending by category?

The table on the right does it with SUMIF(C:C, category, D:D), and the doughnut chart draws it. Add a category by typing it under the others and filling the formula down.

Can I open it in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes: in Gridwork, More then Save as Excel (.xlsx) keeps the formulas. It’s free, with no account, and the file stays on your device until you save it.
