Nonograms

Nonograms are picture logic puzzles, also called picross, griddlers or paint-by-numbers. Each number tells you the length of a run of filled squares in that row or column, in order. Work out which squares are filled using logic alone, and a pattern appears.

There is a new daily puzzle in each size, the same for everyone that day, plus as many random puzzles as you like.

How to play

  1. The clue 3 1 means a run of three filled squares, then at least one gap, then a single filled square, in that order.
  2. Tap a square to fill it. Switch to Cross to mark squares you know are empty; on a computer, right-click places a cross.
  3. Drag across several squares to fill or cross them in one go.
  4. Clues turn grey when their line is complete. The puzzle is solved when every row and column matches its clues.

Solving techniques

TechniqueHow it works
Big runs overlapIn a 10-wide row, a run of 7 must cover the middle 4 squares however you place it. Fill them.
Full linesIf the clues plus their gaps add up to the row length, the row is completely determined.
Zeros and finished linesA 0 clue, or a line whose runs are all placed, means the rest is empty. Cross it out.
EdgesA filled square at the edge must belong to the first run. Extend it to the run's length.
Too small to fitA gap between crosses that is shorter than every remaining run must be empty.
Switch directionEach square you settle in a row is new information for its column. Go back and forth.

Questions

Is Nonograms free?

Yes. Nonograms is free to play with no sign-up and no ads, and the whole game is included. The optional Puzzle Pack, a one-time $2.99 upgrade, adds premium themes, boards and card backs across all five Yuzool puzzle games: Blockfit, Boom Blocks, Merge Drop, Nonograms and Solitaire. Gameplay stays exactly the same.

Do random puzzles always have one solution?

Not always. Random puzzles are generated, and occasionally a different pattern also fits the clues. Any grid that matches every clue counts as solved. Check compares against the generated picture, so it may flag a square that is wrong for that picture but still fits the clues.
