Before you switch

Confirm the new app supports your provider and authentication method.

Check the app’s privacy policy: where do messages, credentials, and AI requests go?

Make sure your current app still works while you test the new one.

Connect the account

Use OAuth or an app-specific password, never your normal account password.

Confirm the app discovers Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Archive, and Trash.

Check that credentials are stored in the device Keychain.

Test the real mail actions

Open a recent message and confirm the full body and attachments load.

Reply to yourself, then confirm the message appears in Sent.

Create a draft, close the app, reopen it, and verify the draft remains.

Archive one test message, then find it in Archive.

Delete one test message and confirm it reaches Trash on the server.

Make it yours

Set the inbox folder you actually want: Inbox, All Mail, or a unified view.

Try search for a sender, a phrase, an attachment, and an unanswered message.

Check dark mode, Dynamic Type, keyboard behavior, and landscape if you use them.

Good apps make the hard parts visible. A connection screen should tell you whether sign-in, folder discovery, and the first sync succeeded instead of leaving you staring at a spinner.
