Private AI product planning on a Mac
The useful question is not whether AI can generate a product plan. It is whether the plan helps you make a better next decision while keeping the early context where you can see it.
Early product work contains a lot of information that is not ready for publication: a customer’s exact words, a pricing worry, a half-formed name and the reason you care about the idea. A local-first workflow can be valuable here, not because a Mac makes the reasoning magical, but because the boundary is easier to understand.
Start with the sentence you actually have
Do not begin by asking for a complete business plan. Write the sentence you would say to a friend. Then ask four smaller questions: who is this for, what job do they need to finish, what is the smallest useful version, and how will you find out if it helped?
“An app for productivity” is a category. “A weekly board for a freelancer who needs to see client deadlines and personal work together” is a decision you can test.
Keep the model inside a decision loop
Use AI to expose assumptions, name alternatives and draft a rough sequence. Do not use it to turn uncertainty into confident-sounding copy. Every generated section should lead to an action: show the idea to someone, build a small screen, write a landing page, or remove a feature.
A useful loop is: prompt, inspect, edit, test. The human step in the middle is where the product becomes yours.
Choose the first version by evidence
When two directions look equally attractive, choose the one that can reach a real person sooner. A narrow utility with a clear buyer is often more informative than a broad platform with a beautiful plan. Keep the first brief short enough that you can change it after a conversation.
