Tick read, write and run for the owner, the group and everyone else, or type permissions as numbers (755) or letters (rwxr-xr-x), and get the other forms and the chmod command.
Worked out by this page:
| Octal | Letters | Used for |
|---|---|---|
755 | rwxr-xr-x | folders, scripts and programs |
644 | rw-r--r-- | ordinary files |
600 | rw------- | private files such as SSH keys |
700 | rwx------ | private folders |
775 | rwxrwxr-x | shared folders for a group |
777 | rwxrwxrwx | everyone can do everything: avoid |
Each digit is one group (owner, group, others) and adds read 4, write 2 and run 1: 7 is all three, 5 is read and run, 4 is read only. A fourth digit at the front sets setuid (4), setgid (2) and the sticky bit (1).
The owner can read, write and run; the group and everyone else can read and run.
On a folder, x lets you go into it and reach its files; r alone only lists the names.
