Five rules for strong passwords
- Length beats tricks.Four or more random words, or 16+ random characters. Swapping a for @ adds almost nothing.
- One password per site.Reuse is how one leak opens every account.
- Let a password manager remember them.Your phone or browser has one built in.
- Turn on two-step sign-in.Use a passkey or an authenticator app where you can.
- Skip names, dates and patterns.Birthdays, pets, teams and qwerty are tried first.

What it does
There are 10,000 four-digit PINs, but people use only a small share of them, and 1234 is by far the most common. Skipping sequences, repeats, years and dates leaves 9,137 PINs to choose from, each equally likely.
Four digits are only safe where wrong tries are limited: with a random PIN, a card that blocks after three attempts gives a thief a 3 in ${nf(PIN4)} chance. If a device lets you use six digits, do.
How to use it

Passwords are made on this device and are never saved, sent or kept in a history. Only your settings are remembered.
Good for

- Phone SIM and voicemail PINs
- Padlocks, lockers and key safes
- Alarm and door entry codes
