    Password strength checker

Checked as you type, on this device. It isn't saved and is cleared when you leave.

    Has this password leaked?

Tap Check to look it up in Have I Been Pwned's list of hundreds of millions of leaked passwords. Only the first 5 characters of its SHA-1 hash are sent, never the password.

    Five rules for strong passwords

    1. Length beats tricks.Four or more random words, or 16+ random characters. Swapping a for @ adds almost nothing.
    2. One password per site.Reuse is how one leak opens every account.
    3. Let a password manager remember them.Your phone or browser has one built in.
    4. Turn on two-step sign-in.Use a passkey or an authenticator app where you can.
    5. Skip names, dates and patterns.Birthdays, pets, teams and qwerty are tried first.

    What it does

This starts at 20 characters from 56 letters and numbers, leaving out symbols and characters that are easy to mix up (I, l, 1, O and 0). That gives about 116 bits: very strong, and still easy to read off a card.

Length matters for Wi-Fi. Anyone in range of a WPA2 network can record a device joining it and then try passwords offline as fast as their hardware allows, so a short or common password can be cracked. WPA3 resists this, but many networks still run WPA2 or a mix. Routers accept 8 to 63 characters.

    How to use it

    1. A 20-character password is ready at the top.
    2. Make it longer if you like; there are no symbols to fumble on a TV remote.
    3. Copy it into your router's settings (usually under Wireless or Wi-Fi security).

Passwords are made on this device and are never saved, sent or kept in a history. Only your settings are remembered.

    Good for

    • Your home router or mesh system
    • A separate guest network
    • Office, shop and holiday rental Wi-Fi
    • Mobile hotspots

    Questions

How long should a Wi-Fi password be?

At least 16 random characters; 20 or more is better. Wi-Fi passwords can be attacked offline, so length matters more than for a website that limits tries.

What happens when I change my Wi-Fi password?

Every device on the network disconnects and needs the new password. Phones can share it by QR code or nearby sharing, so you only type it on devices that can't.
