How to play Klondike solitaire
The goal is to move all 52 cards onto the four foundations at the top right, one pile per suit, building up from Ace to King.
- The tableau is the seven columns. Only the bottom card of each column starts face up.
- Build down in alternating colours. A red 7 can go on a black 8; a black 6 can go on a red 7.
- Move runs together. You can move a face-up run of cards as a group if the top card of the run fits.
- Turn over hidden cards. When you move the face-up cards off a face-down card, it turns over.
- Only a King (or a run starting with a King) can go into an empty column.
- The stock is the face-down pile at the top left. Tap it to turn cards onto the waste pile. The top card of the waste can be played. When the stock runs out, tap the empty space to turn the waste back over.
- Foundations start with Aces and build up by suit. Tap a card and it moves to its foundation if it can go there.
Tapping a card moves it to the best legal place: a foundation first, otherwise a column. Dragging lets you choose exactly where it goes.
Draw 1 or Draw 3?
| Draw 1 | Draw 3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cards turned from the stock | One at a time | Three at a time; only the top one is playable |
| Difficulty | Gentler; most deals can be won | Harder; many cards stay buried |
| Good for | Relaxing, learning the game | A challenge, planning ahead |
Changing the mode starts a new deal.
Scoring
The score follows the familiar standard scoring used by classic computer solitaire:
| Move | Points |
|---|---|
| Waste to column | +5 |
| Waste or column to foundation | +10 |
| Turning over a column card | +5 |
| Foundation back to a column | −15 |
| Recycling the waste (Draw 1) | −100 |
The score never goes below zero. Moves and time are shown too, if you prefer to race the clock or play efficiently.
Strategy tips
- Free the hidden cards first. The face-down cards in the tableau are what stop you winning. Prefer moves that turn one over.
- Work on the longest columns. They hide the most cards.
- Do not rush to empty a column unless you have a King ready to fill it.
- Hold back on the foundations early. Sending low cards up is safe, but a 5 or 6 may be needed in the tableau to move a run.
- Choose between same-colour cards carefully. If two black 8s could take your red 7, pick the one that frees more cards.
- In Draw 3, think about the order. Playing one card from the waste changes which cards appear on the next pass.
- Use undo to learn. Trying a line and stepping back is how most people get better.
Questions
Is every game winnable?
No. Some deals cannot be solved however you play, especially in Draw 3. Most Draw 1 deals can be won with perfect play, though far fewer are won in practice. If you are stuck, start a new game. There is no penalty.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The layout fits narrow screens, and tapping a card is often quicker than dragging on a phone. Add it to your Home Screen to open it like an app.
Is my game saved?
Your current game and statistics are kept in this browser on this device. Clearing site data, or private browsing, removes them.
Is it really free?
Yes. It is free to play in your browser with no sign-up, no download and no pop-ups, and every game is included. The optional Puzzle Pack, a one-time $2.99 upgrade, adds premium card backs and themes here and in the other Yuzool puzzle games: Blockfit, Boom Blocks, Merge Drop and Nonograms. Gameplay stays exactly the same.
