Sentences are counted as you write. A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, or at the end of a line, but not after abbreviations such as Mr., Dr. and e.g., or after initials like J. K.
Words per sentence is the average length. The Readability panel uses it with syllables per word to give a Flesch reading ease score and a grade level, so you can see when long sentences make text harder to read.
