Word Counter guide
How many pages is 1,000 words?
1,000 words is about 4 pages double-spaced or 2 pages single-spaced by the usual rule of thumb: 250 words per double-spaced page in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Plain paragraphs with no headings fit more, so in our own test 1,000 words filled about 3 double-spaced pages.
Words to pages: the quick chart
Teachers, publishers and most online calculators use the same convention: about 250 words per double-spaced page and 500 per single-spaced page, in a 12pt font such as Times New Roman with 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins. Use it when you need a quick estimate, then check the real document.
| Words | Double | Single | Read | Speak |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 1 | ½ | 1 min | 1⅔ min |
| 500 | 2 | 1 | 2 min | 3⅓ min |
| 750 | 3 | 1½ | 3 min | 5 min |
| 1,000 | 4 | 2 | 4 min | 6⅔ min |
| 1,500 | 6 | 3 | 6 min | 10 min |
| 2,000 | 8 | 4 | 8 min | 13 min |
| 2,500 | 10 | 5 | 11 min | 17 min |
| 3,000 | 12 | 6 | 13 min | 20 min |
| 5,000 | 20 | 10 | 21 min | 33 min |
Reading time assumes 238 words a minute and speaking time 150 words a minute; both are explained below.
Words per page by font and spacing
The rule of thumb is deliberately cautious. It allows for a title, a heading block, short paragraphs and the odd quotation. A page of nothing but full paragraphs holds more, and the font makes a big difference.
To show how much, we laid out the same long stretch of English prose (about 4.8 letters a word, paragraphs of around 115 words, a half-inch first-line indent, no headings) in each font with 1-inch margins, and counted how many words fitted on a page.
| Font and size | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman 12pt | 680 / 720 | 340 / 360 |
| Times New Roman 11pt | 820 / 850 | 410 / 420 |
| Arial 12pt | 630 / 670 | 320 / 330 |
| Arial 11pt | 740 / 780 | 370 / 390 |
| Georgia 12pt | 640 / 660 | 320 / 330 |
| Verdana 12pt | 550 / 570 | 270 / 290 |
| Courier New 12pt | 460 / 480 | 230 / 240 |
"Single" here is the standard single line spacing of about 1.15 times the font size, as in Word. A4 is slightly taller than US Letter, so it holds a few more lines.
Worked example
A 1,000-word essay in Times New Roman 12pt, double-spaced, on US Letter. By the rule of thumb it is 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 pages. As plain paragraphs it is closer to 1,000 ÷ 340 ≈ 3 pages. Add an MLA-style heading, a title and a works-cited page and you are nearer 4. Both answers are fair; the word count is the number that does not move.
Why page counts vary
- Font. Wide fonts such as Verdana fit about a fifth fewer words than Times New Roman at the same size.
- Spacing. Double spacing halves the words on a page; 1.5 spacing sits in between.
- Margins and paper. Wider margins mean fewer words. A4 holds a little more than US Letter.
- Paragraphs and dialogue. Every paragraph break leaves part of a line empty. Fiction with lots of dialogue fills pages fast.
- Headings, lists and quotations. Each takes space without adding many words.
- Your vocabulary. Longer words mean fewer words per line. Technical writing runs longer than everyday prose.
Reading and speaking time
Adults reading non-fiction silently manage about 238 words a minute on average, according to a 2019 review of 190 studies by Marc Brysbaert (Journal of Memory and Language). Fiction is a little faster, at about 260. So 1,000 words takes around four minutes to read.
Speaking is slower. Most people present at roughly 120 to 160 words a minute, and 150 is a common planning figure. A 1,000-word speech therefore runs about 6 to 8 minutes. Slow down for a big room, a nervous audience or a technical subject.
Word Counter shows both times as you type, and you can set your own reading and speaking speed. Time yourself reading a page aloud once and use that number.
Words, characters and platform limits
In everyday English, a word averages about 5 to 6 characters once you include the space after it. In our sample it was 5.9, so 1,000 words is roughly 6,000 characters with spaces, or 5,000 without. Social posts and forms count characters, not words:
| Where | Limit | About |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 | 45 words |
| Instagram bio | 150 | 25 words |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | 370 words |
| TikTok caption | 2,200 | 370 words |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 | 500 words |
| YouTube title | 100 | 16 words |
| SMS text message | 160 | 26 words |
| Meta description (Google) | ~155 | 25 words |
Only about the first 125 characters of an Instagram caption show before "more", and a single emoji or accented letter can cut an SMS to 70 characters. Word Counter checks text against these limits and highlights anything that runs over.
Common mistakes
- Padding with formatting. Bigger fonts and wider margins are easy to spot. Markers notice 13pt text.
- Assuming everything counts. Many courses exclude the title, references and appendices from the word count. Check the rules.
- Writing to the page, not the brief. Hitting four pages with three pages of ideas shows. Cut, then add evidence.
- Trusting one tool's page count. Word, Google Docs and Pages lay out text slightly differently. The word count is the stable measure.
Questions
How many pages is 500 words?
About 2 pages double-spaced or 1 page single-spaced, using 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Plain paragraphs may fit on a little less.
How many pages is 2,000 words?
About 8 pages double-spaced or 4 single-spaced by the rule of thumb. In practice, with few headings, expect 6 to 8 double-spaced pages.
How many words are on a single-spaced page?
About 500 by the usual convention. A full page of plain paragraphs in Times New Roman 12pt can hold 650 to 700 words; wider fonts such as Arial or Verdana hold fewer.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes at an average silent reading speed of 238 words a minute, and about 6 to 7 minutes to say aloud at 150 words a minute.
How many paragraphs is 1,000 words?
Usually 5 to 8. Academic paragraphs often run 150 to 200 words, while web and news writing uses shorter ones of 50 to 100 words.
Does the title count towards the word count?
It depends on the rules you were given. Many schools and universities leave out the title, headings, references and appendices, but not all do. If the brief does not say, ask, and count only the main text to be safe.
