Word Counter

Title tag length checker

Check that a page title fits in Google's results before it gets cut off: roughly 50 to 60 characters.

The counts below update as you type. Your text is saved on this device automatically.

What it does

Google shows page titles up to about 600 pixels wide, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters such as W and M take more room than i and l, so treat 60 as a guide rather than a hard limit.

The ring is set to 60 and highlights anything past it, and the Meta title row warns when a title may be cut off. Put the words people search for first and the site name last.

How to use it

  1. Type the title.
  2. Watch the ring: anything past 60 is highlighted.
  3. If it's long, cut words from the end first, where the site name usually goes.

Everything is counted on this device. Nothing you write is uploaded, and it works offline.

Good for

  • Writing titles for new pages and blog posts
  • Fixing titles flagged as too long in an SEO audit
  • Product and category page titles
  • Email subject lines, which are cut in a similar way

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google cuts titles by width (about 600 pixels), so wide letters use more room than narrow ones.

Is a longer title penalised?

No. A longer title is cut off with an ellipsis in results, and Google sometimes rewrites titles, but length on its own isn't a penalty.
