Troupe vs Splitwise

Both can help friends settle shared costs, but their scope is different. Splitwise is an expense ledger for groups and everyday life. Troupe adds the itinerary, bookings, packing and trip documents around the expenses.

Short version: if all you need is to record shared expenses across roommates, trips and friends, Splitwise is purpose-built for that. If your trip already needs a shared day plan, booking records and packing list as well as a “who owes whom?” balance, Troupe combines those jobs in a trip-centered workflow.

Expense app or trip workspace?

Splitwise’s official product description covers groups, friends, balances, equal or unequal splits, debt simplification, recurring expenses, offline mode, cloud sync and payment integrations. Its Pro feature list adds unlimited expenses, transaction import in selected markets, currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemization, charts, search and default splits. The help center currently says free accounts can add up to four expenses per day; Pro pricing varies by subscription type, country, date, taxes and offers, so there is no single dependable global price to print here.

Troupe keeps expense entries attached to the trip context: the dinner, booking or activity can sit beside its payer and the group balance. It also includes itinerary, booking import, packing, stored trip documents and offline access to saved trip details. Troupe’s US App Store listing provides a free first trip for up to four people, then $3.99/month or $29.99 lifetime for the organizer; invited travelers collaborate without each buying Pro.

One group can have both kinds of money problem

Splitwise is useful when the same people share rent, groceries and recurring purchases throughout the year, then also travel together. Its general-purpose ledger and receipt tools can remain the home for those ongoing balances. Troupe is more trip-shaped: a shared cost can sit beside the hotel, meal or activity it belongs to, while the group can also see the schedule, packing and booking details. If a group already relies on Splitwise, there is no need to migrate every expense just to use Troupe for a single holiday; decide whether keeping the trip-specific costs in the itinerary reduces enough context switching.

Choose Splitwise if…

Choose Troupe if…

Our honest take: Troupe is not a replacement for every Splitwise use case. Splitwise is more suitable as an ongoing group-expense tracker and has stronger receipt-specific features. Troupe is more relevant when the expense ledger is one part of a trip coordination problem. Some groups may prefer to use both; the comparison is about reducing app switching, not claiming feature parity.

Pricing and sources

Prices checked September 13, 2026. Splitwise says prices vary; check its current in-app offer before subscribing. Troupe’s $29.99 lifetime and $3.99 monthly amounts are the US App Store snapshot, not universal pricing.

Keep the trip and its costs together

Try Troupe for one trip and see whether balances make more sense beside the booking and plan they belong to.
