How to change the font in your Instagram bio

Instagram has no font setting for your bio. Instead, you type your text in a font generator, copy the styled version and paste it into Edit profile. The "fonts" are really special Unicode letters, so they work almost anywhere you can type, but screen readers struggle with them, so use them for a word or two, not the whole bio.

How "Instagram fonts" actually work

When you see 𝐛𝐨π₯𝐝, π’Έπ“Šπ“‡π“ˆπ’Ύπ“‹π‘’ or 𝕠𝕦π•₯π•π•šπ•Ÿπ•– text in someone's bio, they have not changed a font. They have used different characters.

Unicode, the standard that lets every phone and computer show the same text, includes a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. It holds complete bold, italic, script, double-struck, Fraktur and monospace alphabets, made for writing maths. To your phone, 𝐀 is not a bold A: it is a separate symbol that happens to look like one.

Other styles borrow from elsewhere: small caps (Κœα΄‡ΚŸΚŸα΄) come from phonetic letters, bubble letters (β“—β“”β“›β“›β“ž) from enclosed characters, and upside-down text from look-alike letters. Strikethrough and underline add combining marks to each letter.

Because they are characters, not formatting, they survive copy and paste into almost any app. A font generator such as Fancy Text simply swaps each letter you type for its look-alike.

Step by step: Instagram

  1. Make the text. Open a font generator, type your line, and tap the style you like to copy it.
  2. Open your profile. In Instagram, go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  3. Paste. Tap Bio (or Name), place the cursor where you want it, and paste.
  4. Save. Tap Done or the tick, then check your profile on another device if you can.

The bio limit is 150 characters. Your username cannot be styled: it only allows letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Your display name can be, but think twice: people searching for your plain name may not find a styled one.

Preview firstFancy Text shows your styled line inside a mock bio and a chat message, so you can check it reads well before you paste it.

TikTok, X and other apps

The method is the same everywhere: copy the styled text, open your profile editor, paste, save.

Where to paste, and what to watch for
AppWhere to pasteWatch for
InstagramEdit profile β€Ί Bio or Name150-character bio; username stays plain
TikTokEdit profile β€Ί Bio or NameShort bio limit (about 80 characters)
XEdit profile β€Ί Bio or NameMost fancy letters count as 2 characters
DiscordProfile β€Ί About me, or a messageNicknames may be limited by server rules
WhatsApp, iMessageAny message or statusFine for a word; tiring for a paragraph
FacebookBio and postsProfile names must be your real name in plain letters

Limits change from time to time, so treat the numbers above as a guide. Because many styled letters are stored as two units of text, some apps count them as two characters, so a fancy line can hit a limit sooner than it looks.

Accessibility: how screen readers hear it

This is the honest catch. Screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack read characters, not looks. A bio written in 𝐁𝐨π₯𝐝 might be read as "mathematical bold capital B, mathematical bold small o…", letter by letter, or skipped entirely. Blind and low-vision followers can lose your whole message.

  • Keep your name, what you do and any call to action in plain text.
  • Style one short word or line for flair, such as a heading or a sign-off.
  • Never style hashtags. A styled tag is a different string, so it will not link to the plain one or show up in searches for it.
  • Avoid glitch (Zalgo) text near anything important: the stacked marks can overlap nearby lines and are noisy for screen readers.
  • Prefer the common styles (bold, italic, small caps). Rare symbols can show as empty boxes on older phones.
A good balance"𝓒π“ͺ𝓻π“ͺ𝓱 ✦ Ceramics in Leeds ✦ Orders open Fridays" keeps the name decorative and the useful part readable for everyone.

Common mistakes

  • Styling the whole bio. It is hard to read for everyone and unreadable for screen-reader users.
  • Styling your searchable name. People who search for you type plain letters.
  • Expecting styled text to be searchable or tappable. Styled hashtags, @mentions and links do not work.
  • Mixing too many styles. One style plus one or two symbols looks deliberate; five looks like a ransom note.
  • Not checking on another device. A style that looks great on a new iPhone may show boxes on an older Android phone.

Questions

Can I change the actual font on Instagram?

Not in your bio or name. Instagram uses one system font there. Stories and Reels have their own text styles, but for your profile the only way is Unicode look-alike characters pasted in.

Are Instagram font generators safe?

The text itself is harmless: it is just characters. Prefer a generator that works in your browser without sending what you type anywhere. Fancy Text does all the work on your device.

Why do some fancy letters show as boxes?

The device viewing them has no font that contains those characters. It is most common on older phones and with rarer styles. Bold, italic and small caps are the safest.

Will fancy text hurt my reach or search?

Styled words are not the same text as plain ones, so they will not match searches or hashtags. Keep anything you want to be found by, such as your name and keywords, in plain letters.

Do screen readers read fancy text?

Badly. They often read each letter by its Unicode name, such as "mathematical bold capital A", or skip it. Use styled text for decoration only and keep the meaning in plain text.

Does it work on TikTok and X too?

Yes. Copy and paste works the same way in TikTok, X, Discord and most messaging apps. On X, most fancy letters count as two characters towards the limit.
