Grade book spreadsheet template

Type each student’s marks across the row. The template works out each student’s average, turns it into a letter grade with IFS, and shows the class average and the top mark for every assessment.

What’s in it

The template opens with example numbers you can type over, and a chart that follows the numbers. Here’s the first sheet as it opens:

The formulas it uses

  • F2: =AVERAGE(B2:E2) gives 83.3. AVERAGE: the average of the numbers.
  • G2: =IFS(F2>=90,"A",F2>=80,"B",F2>=70,"C",F2>=60,"D",TRUE,"F") gives B. IFS: the value for the first test that’s true.
  • B9: =MAX(B2:B7) gives 92. MAX: the largest number.

Tips

  • Change the grade boundaries in the IFS formula (90 for an A, 80 for a B …) to match your school’s.
  • For a weighted average, swap AVERAGE for SUMPRODUCT of the marks and the weights.
  • Sort by the Average column to rank the class.

Questions

How are letter grades given?

IFS checks the average against the boundaries in order: 90 or more is an A, 80 a B, 70 a C, 60 a D, anything else an F. Edit the numbers to use your own scale.

Can I weight the final exam more?

Yes: replace the AVERAGE with a weighted sum such as =B2*0.2+C2*0.2+D2*0.2+E2*0.4, then fill it down.

Can I open it in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes: in Gridwork, More then Save as Excel (.xlsx) keeps the formulas. It’s free, with no account, and the file stays on your device until you save it.
