An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, and everything counts: letters, spaces, line breaks, emoji and hashtags. Only the start shows in the feed before "more", about the first 125 characters, so the opening line does the work.
The ring shows your caption against 2,200 and highlights anything past it, and the Instagram caption row in Limits shows the characters left. TikTok captions are checked against the same 2,200.
