Angle finder

Read an angle against level with the phone's edge, or between two lines with the protractor.

Surface
Lay it flat or stand it on an edgeFlat on a shelf or table, you get the bubble with two axes. Stand the phone on its edge against a frame or shelf for the tube level.

About the angle finder

An angle finder tells you the angle of something against level or vertical: a chair leg, a banister, a table saw blade, a sloping board. Rest your phone's long edge on it, and the edge level reads the angle in degrees, to a tenth of a degree.

For an angle between two lines that aren't tied to level (a corner, a drawing, a photo), switch to the Protractor tab and drag its two arms over the lines.

Computers have no tilt sensor, so on a laptop or desktop the level shows "No tilt sensor here". Open this page on your phone for the level. The ruler and protractor work on a computer right now.

How to use it

  1. Open this page on your phone (iPhone: tap Allow for motion access).
  2. Hold or rest the phone's long edge against the part whose angle you want.
  3. Read the angle from level. Turn the phone upright to measure from vertical instead.
  4. Use Set zero on one surface, then move the phone to another: the reading is the angle between them.

Good for

  • Matching the angle of a stair banister or a sloping ceiling
  • Setting a mitre saw, chop saw or table saw blade
  • Checking a monitor, easel or music stand tilt
  • Finding the angle between two surfaces with Set zero

Questions

How do I measure the angle between two surfaces?

Rest the phone on the first surface and tap Set zero. Then move it to the second: the reading is the angle between the two.

How do I measure an angle on paper or a screen?

Use the Protractor tab. Drag the centre dot to the corner and the two handles along the lines, and it shows the angle and the reflex angle.

Does it work on a computer?

The protractor does. The angle finder needs a phone or tablet, because computers have no tilt sensor.
