How to split expenses with friends fairly, and settle up fast

To split expenses fairly, agree up front how costs will be shared, write down every shared cost as it happens (who paid, how much, and who it was for), then add it all up at the end: each person's balance is what they paid minus their share. People who are owed money get paid by people who owe it, and a little planning means a group of six never needs more than five transfers to settle, and often fewer.

Agree the rules before you spend

Most money arguments between friends come from different assumptions, not from the amounts. Before a trip or when you move in together, agree three things:

  • What's shared. Accommodation and fuel, yes. What about drinks, souvenirs, or the one person who doesn't drink?
  • How each thing is split. Equally by default, with exceptions spelled out.
  • When you settle. At the end of the trip, or monthly for a shared house.

Then keep one shared record from day one. Reconstructing a week of spending from bank statements and receipts is where the trouble starts.

Five ways to split a cost

Split types and when to use them
SplitHow it worksGood for
EquallyEveryone involved pays the same shareAccommodation, fuel, shared food shops
Exact amountsYou type what each person owesA bill where you know each person's part
PercentageEach person pays a set percentageCouples or housemates with different incomes
SharesEach person has a number of shares, such as 2 for a couple and 1 for a singleFamilies and couples in a group
ItemisedEach line on the receipt goes to whoever had it, with tax and tip shared in proportionRestaurant bills where orders differ a lot
Rent in a shared houseSplitting rent by room size is common: a bigger room or an en suite pays more. Bills such as energy and broadband are usually split equally.

Working out who owes whom

For each person, add up everything they paid, then subtract their share of everything they were part of. A positive balance means they're owed money; a negative one means they owe.

Worked example

A weekend away for three. Ana paid £300 for the cottage, Ben paid £90 for fuel, Cat paid £60 for food. Total £450, so each person's share is £150.

Ana: paid £300, share £150, so she is owed £150. Ben: paid £90, owes £60. Cat: paid £60, owes £90. Ben sends Ana £60 and Cat sends Ana £90. Two transfers and everyone is square.

With bigger groups, many small debts cancel out. Instead of everyone paying everyone back for each item, you only need to settle the net balances. Even Split goes further and finds the smallest number of transfers that clears every balance.

Splitting costs in Even Split

Even Split is a free bill splitter that runs in your browser. No one in the group needs an account.

  1. Make a group with + New group: a name, your name, the currency and who else is in it.
  2. Add an expense: what it was, the amount, who paid (one person or several) and how to split it: equally, exact, %, shares or itemised. You can add notes, a category and a receipt photo.
  3. Check Balances. The Settle up section lists the transfers that clear every debt, with a line showing how many separate debts it simplified.
  4. Record a payment when someone pays, so the balances update.
  5. Share: send the group to the others as a link, or share a "who owes what" card.

Expenses can be in more than one currency, with exchange rates you enter yourself. Data is kept in your browser, with backup to a file and CSV export. Receipt photos stay on your device and aren't included in links or backups.

Common mistakes

  • Not agreeing the rules first. Settle what is shared before the trip, not after.
  • Writing it down later. Add each cost when it happens, while the receipt is in your hand.
  • Splitting everything equally. The friend who skipped the wine shouldn't pay for it. Itemise when orders differ.
  • Forgetting who paid. Every expense needs a payer as well as an amount.
  • Paying back item by item. Settle net balances: fewer transfers, less hassle.
  • Leaving it for months. Settle at the end of the trip or each month while everyone remembers.

Questions

What is the fairest way to split a bill?

It depends on the bill. Equal splits are simplest when everyone shared the same thing. For restaurant bills where orders differ, splitting by item, with tax and tip shared in proportion, is fairer.

How do I split costs between a couple and a single person?

Use shares: give the couple 2 shares and the single person 1. The couple then pays two thirds and the single person one third.

How do you settle a group trip with the fewest payments?

Work out each person's net balance first, then match people who owe with people who are owed. Even Split calculates the smallest number of transfers for you.

How should housemates split rent?

Many split rent by room size or features such as an en suite, and share bills equally. Agree it in writing when you move in.

Do my friends need the app?

No account is needed. You can share the group as a link, or send a "who owes what" card to the group chat.

Is Even Split free?

Yes. Even Split is free with no account. Your groups are stored in your browser, with backup to a file and CSV export.
