How to Read App Store Sales and Refunds for an Indie App
A practical way to review App Store sales and refunds for an indie app: separate signals from noise, compare periods, check product changes and decide what to do next.

App Store sales data is useful when it changes a decision. A single day’s spike or dip rarely tells the whole story. Indie developers need a repeatable review that connects units, revenue, refunds, product changes and distribution without turning every number into a story.
Start with a comparable window
Compare similar periods rather than yesterday with a launch week. Look at a week or month, note meaningful changes and record what was different: a feature release, a mention, a price change or a campaign.
Keep refunds visible
Units can look healthy while refunds change the commercial picture. Keep sales and refunds in the same review so you do not confuse attention with durable revenue.
Separate observation from explanation
“Downloads rose” is an observation. “The screenshot change caused it” is a hypothesis. Write both down, but do not treat a hypothesis as a conclusion until the pattern survives another check.
Make the weekly review small enough to repeat
Revenue Bear is designed for indie developers who want to review app sales, refunds and portfolio performance without maintaining a custom spreadsheet dashboard. See the revenue review guide or explore Revenue Bear.
The aim is not to know every metric. It is to know what changed, what you believe and which next action is worth taking.
