UTM tags make it easier to answer a practical question: which Pinterest links brought people to your site? The tags are labels on the destination URL. They do not improve distribution by themselves, but they give analytics tools a consistent way to group visits.

The most important part is not finding a complicated tracking scheme. It is choosing a small naming convention and using it the same way on every Pin.

A simple Pinterest UTM template

For an unpaid Pin, start with these fields:

Parameter Suggested value What it identifies
utm_source pinterest The platform that referred the visit
utm_medium organic Unpaid distribution, distinct from ads
utm_campaign A stable topic or promotion name The campaign or content group
utm_content A unique creative label The specific Pin or image

Example:

https://example.com/guide/?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=fall_trip_planning&utm_content=weekend_checklist

Use your real destination URL in place of example.com. Keep names lowercase, avoid spaces, and use underscores or hyphens consistently. The campaign should describe a group of related Pins; the content label should distinguish one creative from another.

Decide what belongs in the campaign name

Choose a campaign value that will still make sense when you review it later. A topic such as fall_trip_planning is easier to understand than october_test_2. If the Pin supports a time-limited offer, a value such as october_bundle_sale may be appropriate. If you are comparing several creative ideas for the same topic, keep the campaign fixed and change only utm_content.

For example, two Pins about the same checklist could use utm_campaign=weekend_trip_planning, while their content values are packing_list_pin and shared_costs_pin. This makes it possible to compare the individual creative without splitting the larger subject into inconsistent campaign names.

Add tags without breaking the destination

If the destination URL has no query string, start the first parameter with ?. If it already contains a query string, join the UTM tags with &. Do not add a second question mark. Encode special characters when needed, and keep the full URL intact when pasting it into Pinterest.

After creating a link, open it in a private browser window. Confirm that the intended page loads and that any redirect preserves the UTM parameters. Some URL shorteners and redirect rules discard query strings; if that happens, fix the link path before publishing more Pins with the same pattern.

Avoid common reporting mistakes

Do not use a different spelling of Pinterest for each batch. pinterest, Pinterest and pinterest.com can appear as separate source values in some analytics reports. Likewise, avoid changing organic to social or pin without a reason. Stable labels make comparisons possible.

Do not put the entire Pin title in utm_campaign. Titles change and may contain punctuation or characters that make reports unwieldy. Use a short creative key in utm_content, and keep a posting log that maps the key to its full title, board, destination and publication date.

Finally, do not assume the presence of a tagged link proves that it generated a visit. Tags help identify a visit when an analytics tool receives and reports it. Check your tool’s campaign and referrer reports, and confirm what it collects before drawing conclusions. For a complete measurement workflow, see how to track Pinterest traffic to your website and why Pinterest clicks and website sessions can differ.

A repeatable checklist

Before scheduling a Pin, verify four things: the destination is the right page; utm_source and utm_medium follow your convention; the campaign name is stable across related Pins; and utm_content uniquely identifies this image or creative. Then save the exact final URL in your posting log.

That modest discipline is enough for a small publisher to learn which subjects and creative approaches earn visits. Add more dimensions only when a real reporting question needs them.
