Decrease evenly calculator: spread decreases across a row
To decrease evenly, take the decreases out of the stitch count first (each k2tog uses two stitches), share the stitches that are left between the gaps, and put a decrease between each gap. The calculator writes the row out for you.
Decrease evenly
How it works
From 72 stitches to 64 is 8 decreases. Each k2tog uses 2 stitches, so 16 of the 72 go into decreases and 56 stay plain. In the round they share 8 gaps of 7: [k7, k2tog] 8 times. Worked flat there are 9 gaps, with half gaps at each end.
Leaning decreases
K2tog leans to the right. For a decrease that leans left use ssk: slip two stitches one at a time knitwise, then knit them together through the back. Across a row it does not matter which you use; at the edges of a shaped piece, patterns pair them so they mirror each other.
Questions
What is the crochet version of k2tog?
Sc2tog (single crochet two together; dc2tog in UK terms): pull up a loop in each of the next two stitches and finish them as one.
Why does it say there aren't enough stitches?
Each decrease uses two stitches, so you can take away at most half the stitches in one row. Split a big decrease over two rows.
