US and UK crochet terms: a converter and chart
UK crochet names count one more than US names: US single crochet is UK double crochet, US double is UK treble, US half double is UK half treble. Chain and slip stitch are the same. Paste a pattern below and it switches every stitch name in one go.

Why they differ
The two systems name stitches by different things: the US names count the loops pulled through at the end, the UK names count the loops on the hook when you start. So every name from single crochet up is one step apart.
How to tell which a pattern uses
A pattern with "sc" or "single crochet" is US: the UK has no single crochet. "Htr", "miss" or "tension" mean UK. The converter guesses from these words if you leave it on Guess.
Questions
Are the stitches themselves different?
No: only the names. A US dc and a UK tr are the same stitch.
What about Australian patterns?
Australia and New Zealand mostly use UK terms.
