Freelance design work rarely fits into neat project phases. A client may approve one screen while asking for changes to another, a developer may need assets earlier than expected and production work can expand around a small feedback request. A weekly planner for freelance designers should make those trade-offs visible without turning the work into a project-management ceremony.

Put review points on the week first

Start by placing client calls, review deadlines and handoff times on the board. These are the points other work must fit around. Then add the preparation needed before each one: assemble the prototype, write the questions, export the right files or check the implementation.

Design tasks often look small until the review is tomorrow. Giving preparation its own place prevents the familiar late-night scramble.

Break creative work into useful next actions

“Work on the brand” is difficult to schedule. “Explore three type pairings” or “prepare two homepage directions for review” tells you what the session is meant to produce. A useful next action also makes it easier to resume after another client interrupts the week.

Keep the action small enough to move when a deadline changes. If the whole project is one giant task, moving it does not tell you what has actually changed.

Leave room for feedback and production

Do not fill every day with new design work. Leave space for revisions, export checks, developer questions and the admin around running a studio. A board that looks slightly underfilled on Monday may be exactly right by Thursday.

When a client moves a review, move the preparation and follow-up together. Avoid copying tasks into a new day and leaving an old version behind; duplicate work is one of the fastest ways to make a freelance week look impossible.

Use Cadence for a clear Mac view

Cadence is a native weekly planner for Mac and iPhone. It gives independent designers a focused board for client work, reviews, admin and unfinished tasks, with iCloud sync when the plan needs to be checked away from the desk.

It is deliberately smaller than a full project-management suite. That makes it useful when the main problem is deciding what fits this week, not building another system around the work.

End the week with a promise review

Before Friday ends, check which client promises were completed, which are waiting on feedback and which need a new agreement. Carry forward only the next action that still matters. If a task has moved for several weeks, decide whether to schedule it, reduce it or remove it.

A good weekly planner does not make design work predictable. It gives changing work a place to go, so you can protect quality while staying honest about capacity.
