    Five rules for strong passwords

    1. Length beats tricks.Four or more random words, or 16+ random characters. Swapping a for @ adds almost nothing.
    2. One password per site.Reuse is how one leak opens every account.
    3. Let a password manager remember them.Your phone or browser has one built in.
    4. Turn on two-step sign-in.Use a passkey or an authenticator app where you can.
    5. Skip names, dates and patterns.Birthdays, pets, teams and qwerty are tried first.

    What it does

Twenty random characters from 87 letters, numbers and symbols give about 128 bits of entropy, on a par with the 128-bit keys used in strong encryption.

That makes 20 a good default when a password manager is filling it in for you and you never need to type it.

    How to use it

    1. A 20-character password is ready at the top.
    2. Change the character types under Options if a site has rules.
    3. Tap Copy and save it in your password manager.

Passwords are made on this device and are never saved, sent or kept in a history. Only your settings are remembered.

    Good for

    • Email, banking and other important accounts
    • Admin and server accounts
    • Encrypted files and archives
    • Any account a password manager fills in for you

    Questions

How strong is a 20-character password?

With letters, numbers and symbols, about 128 bits of entropy. At 10 billion guesses a second it would take far longer than the age of the universe to try them all.

Is 20 characters too long for some sites?

A few sites cap passwords at 16 or fewer. If yours rejects it, lower the length to the site's maximum.
