Free crochet ear warmer pattern (twisted headband)
A stretchy ribbed band in half double crochet through the back loops, worked short and flat, then twisted at the front and seamed. It’s a beginner pattern of about 3 hours, and it teaches half double crochet, back loop only, seaming. Follow it below, or open it in Stitchbay to count it row by row.
You’ll need
- 60 m (66 yd) for Child, 70 m (77 yd) for Adult of bulky weight yarn (Chunky), wool blend or acrylic
- a 6 mm (US J-10) hook
- Tapestry needle
- Gauge: 14 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in hdc in the back loop only
Sizes: Child (42 cm round, stretching to fit a 48 cm head), Adult (48 cm round, stretching to fit a 54–58 cm head). Numbers for the bigger sizes are in brackets: cast on 80 (88, 96) means 80 for the first size, 88 for the second, 96 for the third.
Before you start
The ch 2 at the start of each row doesn't count as a stitch.
Each row is the band's width, so the ridges run round your head and it stretches.
Abbreviations
| ch | chain |
| sk | skip |
| hdc | half double crochet |
Band
Foundation: Ch 16.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to end (14 sts).
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc blo in each st to end.
Rep this row until the piece measures 42 (48) cm: about 76 (86) rows in all, ending row 77 (87).
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. For the twist: fold one end in half lengthwise, fold the other end round it so the two interlock, and sew through all four layers. Turn the seam to the inside.
