Free crochet pattern
Easy crochet scarf pattern for beginners (free)
Half double crochet worked in the back loops only, so every row leaves a ridge: it looks knitted and feels squashy. It’s a beginner pattern of about 6 hours, and it teaches foundation chain, half double crochet, back loop only. Follow it below, or open it in Stitchbay to count it row by row.
You’ll need
- 220 m (241 yd) for Child, 400 m (437 yd) for Adult of bulky weight yarn (Chunky), wool blend
- a 6 mm (US J-10) hook
- Tapestry needle
- Gauge: 14 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in hdc in the back loop only
Sizes: Child (14 × 110 cm), Adult (18 × 160 cm). Numbers for the bigger sizes are in brackets: cast on 80 (88, 96) means 80 for the first size, 88 for the second, 96 for the third.
Before you start
The ch 2 at the start of each row doesn't count as a stitch: work the first hdc into the first stitch.
Each row is the scarf's width, so the ridges run across it.
