You’ll need

  • 500 m (547 yd) for 40 cm pad, 630 m (689 yd) for 45 cm pad of medium weight yarn (Worsted), cotton, wool or a blend
  • 5 mm (US 8) needles
  • Tapestry needle, Pins
  • Gauge: 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in the ridge pattern

Sizes: 40 cm pad (Fits a 40 cm (16 in) square cushion pad), 45 cm pad (Fits a 45 cm (18 in) square cushion pad). Numbers for the bigger sizes are in brackets: cast on 80 (88, 96) means 80 for the first size, 88 for the second, 96 for the third.

Before you start

The cover is a little smaller than the pad, so it's plump.

The 3 stitches at each edge are always knit: they stop the strip curling and make the seams easy.

Every stitch count checked. We work every row of this pattern in every size with a stitch counter before publishing it, so the counts in brackets always add up.

Cover

Cast on 73 (81).

Rows 1–6: *K1, p1; rep from * to last 1 st, k1.

Row 7 (RS): K to end.

Row 8 (WS): K3, p to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 9 (RS): K to end.

Row 10 (WS): K to end. The ridge row.

Rep rows 7–10 until the piece measures 90 (100) cm from the cast-on edge: about 236 (260) rows in all, ending row 242 (266).

Rows 243 (267)–248 (272): *K1, p1; rep from * to last 1 st, k1.

Bind off all sts.

Weave in the ends. Lay the strip right side up. Fold the cast-on end in towards the middle, then fold the bound-off end over it, so the seed-stitch ends overlap by about 12 cm and the folded cover is a 40 (45) cm square. Pin and sew both side edges through all the layers, turn right side out through the opening (the overlap is now at the back), and push the pad in.
