You’ll need

  • 110 m (120 yd) for Child, 140 m (153 yd) for Adult S/M, 170 m (186 yd) for Adult L of medium weight yarn (Worsted), wool
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) and 5 mm (US 8) needles: 40 cm circular needles, and double-pointed needles (or a long circular for magic loop) for the crown
  • Stitch marker, Tapestry needle
  • Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in stockinette in the round

Sizes: Child (44 cm round, for a 48 cm head), Adult S/M (49 cm round, for a 53–55 cm head), Adult L (53 cm round, for a 57–60 cm head). Numbers for the bigger sizes are in brackets: cast on 80 (88, 96) means 80 for the first size, 88 for the second, 96 for the third.

Before you start

Join to work in the round without twisting the stitches, and place a marker for the start of the round.

Change to double-pointed needles when the crown gets too small for the circular.
