Common jobs
| You want to | Set |
|---|---|
| Email photos without them bouncing | Compress by quality 75, JPG, longest side 2000 px |
| Meet an upload limit ("max 100 KB") | Target file size 100 KB, JPG |
| Convert iPhone HEIC to JPG | Convert only, JPG |
| Speed up a website | WebP, quality 75, width 1600 px |
| Keep a logo's transparent background | PNG, or WebP |
| Make a passport or form photo smaller | Target size as the form says, JPG |
Which format should I use?
| Format | Best for | Transparency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos | No | Opens everywhere. Small for photos, blurs sharp text and edges. |
| WebP | Websites | Yes | Usually smaller than JPG at the same quality. Some older software cannot open it. |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, graphics | Yes | Lossless, so the quality setting does not apply. Large for photos. |
| HEIC | iPhone camera | Yes | Efficient, but many websites and Windows apps do not accept it. Convert to JPG to share. |
How compression works
Photos are stored with lossy compression: the encoder throws away detail your eye is unlikely to miss. Lowering quality from 95 to 80 often halves the file with no visible change; below about 60, blocks and smudges start to show, especially around text and sharp edges. Reducing the pixel dimensions is the other big lever. A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4000 pixels wide, far more than any screen needs. Resizing it to 2000 pixels cuts the pixels to a quarter.
Target file size mode does both for you. It searches for the highest quality that fits; if even low quality is too big, it steps the dimensions down until the image fits.
About privacy and metadata
Photos from phones carry metadata such as the camera model, the time, and often the GPS location where the picture was taken. Images saved here are re-encoded from the pixels only, so that metadata is not copied across. The orientation is applied first, so photos stay the right way up.
Nothing is uploaded at any point. The page reads the image from your device, processes it in this browser tab, and saves the result back to your device.
Questions
Why is my PNG not getting smaller?
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply to it. Choose WebP or JPG, or reduce the size.
Why did the file get bigger?
An image that was already heavily compressed can grow when it is saved again at higher quality, and converting a graphic to PNG often makes it larger. The list shows the change for each file; if a result is bigger, keep your original.
Can it open HEIC on Windows or Android?
Yes. If your browser cannot read HEIC itself, a decoder downloads automatically the first time you add one. It runs locally like everything else.
Is there a limit?
No fixed limit. Very large images use a lot of memory, and phones handle less than computers.
