How to convert JPG to PNG
Some sites, apps and editors ask for PNG, and PNG is a safe format to keep editing in because it never loses more detail when you save it again.
- Add your JPG images: drop them on the box above, or press Choose JPG images. Add as many as you like.
- PNG is already selected. It is lossless, so there is no quality to set.
- Each file converts straight away on your device. The list shows the size before and after.
- Press Download for one file, or Save all for a ZIP of them all (on a phone, Save all shares them so you can save to Photos).
JPG vs PNG
| JPG (JPEG) | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Photos | Screenshots, logos, text and graphics |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| Compression | Lossy: small files, some detail thrown away | Lossless: exact pixels, larger files |
| Opens in | Everywhere: every phone, computer, website and upload form | Everywhere |
Good to know
- Converting cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG's pixels, no better and no worse.
- Expect the PNG to be much bigger than the JPG, often several times, because PNG stores every pixel exactly.
- The background stays as it is: a JPG has no transparency to keep, and converting does not cut anything out.
- Nothing is uploaded. Your images are read, converted and saved in this browser tab, and camera details and GPS location are not copied into the new file.
Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. It stops further loss when you edit and save again, but it cannot restore detail the JPG compression already removed.
Why is my PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly. Photos have millions of slightly different pixels, which PNG cannot squeeze as hard as JPG.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. The JPG's background becomes part of the PNG. Removing a background is a separate job.
