How to convert AVIF to JPG
AVIF is the newest web image format and very small, but many apps, editors and upload forms cannot open it yet. JPG opens everywhere.
- Add your AVIF images: drop them on the box above, or press Choose AVIF images. Add as many as you like.
- JPG is already selected. Set the quality, and the background colour for any transparent areas.
- Each file converts straight away on your device. The list shows the size before and after.
- Press Download for one file, or Save all for a ZIP of them all (on a phone, Save all shares them so you can save to Photos).
AVIF vs JPG
| AVIF | JPG (JPEG) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Images on websites, the smallest files | Photos |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless, often smaller than WebP | Lossy: small files, some detail thrown away |
| Opens in | Current browsers; many apps and upload forms cannot open it yet | Everywhere: every phone, computer, website and upload form |
Good to know
- Your browser decodes the AVIF: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16 and later) can. Older browsers show an error for that file.
- Transparent parts become the background colour you choose.
- The JPG will usually be bigger than the AVIF, since AVIF compresses very well.
- Nothing is uploaded. Your images are read, converted and saved in this browser tab, and camera details and GPS location are not copied into the new file.
Questions
What is an AVIF file?
An image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because it is often smaller than WebP and JPG at the same quality.
Why can't I open AVIF images?
Many apps, older Windows and macOS versions, and upload forms do not support it yet. Converting to JPG fixes that.
Can I convert JPG to AVIF here?
Only where your browser can write AVIF, and few can yet. The AVIF button is greyed out when it is not available.
